Her mother had it. Her grandmother had it. Her great aunt had it. Stephanie Uetrecht had every reason to be vigilant about breast cancer.
Proactive by nature, Stephanie thought she had covered all the bases. She did genetic testing and got regular mammograms starting in her 30s. It all came up normal.
Last year at 46, Stephanie’s intake questionnaire for a mammogram flagged her as a candidate for the High-Risk Breast Clinic at St. Charles. At her consultation, Stephanie was referred to a breast specialist who recommended additional screenings.
Her very first MRI may have saved her life. A small tumor, hidden deep in the tissue, was detected. Today, without undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, she is in the clear.
A year after her first surgery, Stephanie is preparing for a cyclocross race rather than a chemotherapy appointment. She spends time with her husband and son rather than oncologists. For Stephanie, the clinic made all the difference.
